Orientation Course
“Negotiation Studies,” which has been offered in the fall semester in previous years, will be offered in the spring semester this year.
Professor Tamura explained the significance of studying leadership, including negotiation studies, the importance of liberal arts to deepen learning through dialogue, and “practical learning,” as Yukichi Fukuzawa refers to leadership skills.
In addition, a self-introduction session was held as the first step in developing logical communication skills, which is the goal of this class. In groups of six, the students introduced themselves by name, faculty, hobbies, and activities. They learned how to ask each other questions to deepen their knowledge of each other’s hobbies and activities. Although they happened to be sitting near each other, all the groups were excited to see how well they communicated with each other.
What is a leader? What is leadership?
Mr. Sugita gave us a lecture, with exercises in between, on the difference between a leader and leadership and what authentic leadership is.The differences between leadership and leadership were then discussed by the same members of the group as in the previous self-introduction session. One student presented their ideas to the whole group, which was based on Mr. Sugita’s explanations and showed a high level of awareness of this lecture.
In addition, each student analyzed his or her own leadership skills using a self-diagnostic sheet designed by Mr. Sugita. As a result, in the group dialogue that followed, the strengths and weaknesses of each was well verbalized through the diagnostic sheet.
The class concluded with an explanation of the issues to be addressed throughout the semester.
In summary, the class was productive from the very first session, including the session given by Prof. Tamura. The next session will be similar, focusing on active learning and developing logical communication skills.
