Monday, June 12 Negotiation Studies – Class 9 “Leadership and Public Speaking ” – Mita Campus

Today’s lecture flow

▼ Professor Sugita – (Lecture) Authentic Leadership and Speech Techniques
▼ Professor Sugita – (Exercise) Practical Public Speaking

In the first half, we learned about Authentic Leadership and explored the missions, visions, and values of various companies. We also discussed the differences between public speaking and personal speeches through group discussions, and there was an explanation of key points in public speaking.

In the second half, as an exercise based on the lecture, we delivered (1) a speech aimed at motivating high school students for their entrance exams, and (2) a speech about our own WILL.Since there are not many opportunities to engage in public speaking, students made repeated attempts to figure out the best way to convey their messages, leading to a valuable experience in preparation for the final task.

Public speaking allows to convey a large amount of information compared to personal speeches. However, it comes with time constraints, and because of the physical distance, the connection between parties are weaker. It’s challenging to tailor the speech to each individual, and it often becomes one-sided. Therefore, it’s necessary to anticipate the reactions of the listener more carefullyMoreover, in the context of Authentic Leadership, it was explained that the purpose of a speech is to prompt emotions and actions in the audience, serving as the starting point for a change in their hearts. However, I felt that achieving this goal is difficult and requires a lot of practice and experience.

For the task of delivering a speech to motivate high school students for their entrance exams, I drew upon my own experiences to discuss the benefits of attending university. Then, I provided advice on how to approach studying.Specifically, I talked about the importance of setting long-term and short-term goals and creating a conducive study environment.During the WILL speech, I was amazed by how my peers were able to connect their personal experiences to their future in unique ways. Their creativity was impressive.

I was nervous, but I felt that I was gradually overcoming my weaknesses. Also, this provided an opportunity for introspection more than during the midterm report, and the feedback from the group members was valuable. When delivering personal speeches, I felt like I was engaged in a dialogue with the audience. However, there was an opinion that public speeches could be done unilaterally without the need for active listening skills. However, when I delivered a public speech in my group, I didn’t feel that I could simply talk one-sidedly.This is because with a smaller audience, you can closely observe their reactions. If they are listening attentively, you can see it in their expressions and gestures, but if not, there is less eye contact.

During the exercise, I learned from members who confidently delivered unique WILL speeches. I learned the importance of delivering a consistent message and how to engage students who are not interested in entrance exams. It was not only about the content but also about the importance of earnestly appealing to the audience.I want to apply the feedback I received from fellow students in this speech to the recording of my WILL video (final task).
